Some patients at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Zaria on Monday commended the hospital's consultants for providing skeletal services during the on going strike by resident doctors.
The consultants have been tending to patients at the hospital since the strike commenced.
Some of the patients, who spoke through relations, told NAN that the consultants’ gesture would reduce the difficulties being faced by the patients due to the nationwide strike.
"We highly appreciate the services being provided by the consultants, and this has become a source of succour not only to the patients but to all of us,"Malam Mohammed Abubakar, who is a relation of one of the patients said.
"The consultants are really attentive. They take very good care of the patients," he added.
Mrs Ramatu Uba, also a relation to one of the patients, appealed to the consultants not to relent in their efforts at providing what they described as "humanitarian services".
When contacted, the Chief Medical Director of ABUTH, Prof Khalid Lawal, said the skeletal services being rendered by the consultants were meant to cushion the effects of the strike.
"Though the consultants are not as many as the resident doctors, the skeletal services are meant to cushion the effects of the strike.
"Our Accident and Emergency Unit is also providing its usual essential services.
"Even during the previous strike, our consultants had provided skeletal services," he said.
