The Honorable Minister for Information, Mr. Labaran Maku,
rejected the believe that Nigeria is a problematic nation, and suggested
to rather consider it as a country facing certain challenges, like any
other country in the world. From his point of view, this is a more
constructive approach, which at the end of the day will make those
challenges go off. Mr. Maku advised to learn from the example of the US
that uses "its problems to achieve reformation".
He said this on Sunday at the Nigerian Consulate-General in Atlanta Georgia.
He also called the Nigerians not to pay attention to the negative
information about their country but rather follow the latest news and
based on that try to think what can be done to help the Government
across the sectors.
On power plants, security and diaspora
Minister Maku predicted a revolution in the power sector in the next
two-three years just as it happened in the Telecommunication sector,
which revealed new business opportunities and increased employments in
Nigeria, he said. Mr Maku also disclosed that by the end of 2014
construction of all the power plants in the country will be completed.
"Gradually, power problem will be solved and what we see as a problem is
now an investment opportunity because of the government's policy to
open the sector to private investors," he added.
Speaking on security issues, Mr Maku said there a lot of effort are
being made and new policies designed to combat insecurity, criminality
and what he described as some challenges in the Niger Delta. Comparing
to some developed countries, he added, crime rates in Nigeria are even
lower.
"There have been a lot of cooperation from the citizens of Nigeria in
the Northeast to curb the insecurity which they already know has the
tendencies of crippling the infrastructures in the area. At this point, i
will like to assure you that Nigeria is safe for foreign investors to
do their businesses," he stated.
Mr Maku also commented Diaspora Voting Right and urged Nigerians
living abroad to be patient. He explained that time is needed for the
government to make sure it halted the activities of those who
manipulated the electoral process in Nigeria before the implementation
of the Voting Rights from the diaspora.
"All the reformations going on in Nigeria today as a result of
democratic process are those that no future government can ever take
away or reverse," he reassured.
